Ninth day of protests in Armenia: President’s exit and broken cars of demonstrators
Mass anti-government protests resumed on Saturday morning in Yerevan and other cities of Armenia. This is the ninth day of protests against the appointment of the former President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, as Prime Minister.
Despite the detention of hundreds of protesters in Yerevan the day before, hundreds of supporters of the opposition movement headed by Deputy Nikol Pashinyan again took to the streets of Yerevan on Saturday to continue the actions of peaceful civil disobedience.
Having again broken up into groups demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan and the government, the demonstrators blocked the traffic.
In the area of the Nork massif, where Nikol Pashinyan began his march, the police did not allow the demonstrators to go onto the roadway.
There were reports of delayed activists.
During the day, the police repeatedly used force against demonstrators. The network has spread video, which shows how the police break the car, blocking the road.
Citizens took to the streets in other cities of the country.
By evening, Armenian President Armen Sargsyan came out to the participants of the protest action on the Republic Square in Yerevan.
The President of Armenia arrived surrounded by guards. The protesters greeted him with applause and shouts of "President, reject Serge" and "President, take a step."
According to the site Panarmenian.netHe talked with the leader of the protesters, MP Nikol Pashinyan about 10 for about 10 minutes, after which they “warmly said goodbye,” and the president left.
What they talked about, not reported.
The day before, speaking at a rally on the Republic Square in Yerevan, Nikol Pashinyan put forward demands to the authorities. In particular, he demanded the resignation of newly elected Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan and the holding of early parliamentary elections.
17 April, on the day when parliament elected ex-President Sargsyan as Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition Civil Contract Party and the head of the Yelk parliamentary faction Nikol Pashinyan announced the start of a bloodless velvet revolution. He and his supporters hope to achieve a change of power through peaceful protests, rejecting violence and even counter-violence as a means of struggle.
Despite appeals from the authorities to start a political dialogue, at the rallies the opposition continues to come out with a demand for a change of government.
In an interview with “Armenia” TV company, First Deputy Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan said yesterday: “Even the belligerent countries negotiate and come to a logical decision. We, Armenians, citizens of the Republic of Armenia, are obliged to sit at home, rationally speak and find logical solutions to overcome this situation. In case of instability we all suffer, our country will suffer. ”
Over the past few days, the police have repeatedly warned demonstrators that it has the right to use force to disperse "unauthorized assemblies."
