A 9-year-old girl from Maryland found a megalodon tooth from the largest shark in the history of the Earth

Nine-year-old Molly Sampson discovered a huge shark tooth in Calvert Beach, Maryland. Writes about it Ukrainian Truth.

Scientists of the local museum examined the find and reported that this canine belonged to the representative of the extinct species of sharks Otodus megalodon.

The girl's mother Alicia Sampson said both her daughters Molly and Natalie wanted to go hunting for shark teeth like professionals. They asked for rubber boots, put them on and went looking for them.

Immediately after Christmas breakfast, the whole family went to the beach. Molly saw a tooth in the water, but to get it, she had to wet her hands - the water reached her knees.

“Look at the size of the tooth that Molly just found. He was in the water, so thanks to the rubber boots, she got the best part of her Christmas present, ”the woman wrote on Facebook.

The found tooth is 13 cm long.

Alicia said that her husband had been looking for fossils in the area since he was a child, so his daughters also carried this passion. According to the woman, Molly discovered more than 400 much smaller teeth. But this is the first time I've found a canine of this size.

The family took the tooth to the Calvert Maritime Museum. The department of paleontology confirmed that this canine belonged to the shark Otodus megalodon. The maritime museum curator called it a once-in-a-lifetime find.

Megalodon means "big tooth" in Greek. Therefore, this word was called a species of sharks that lived in the seas around the world. They became extinct about 3,5 million years ago.

In length, these predatory fish reached 20 meters, which is why researchers believe that this species was one of the largest in the world.
