Girl dies from deodorant fumes she sprayed on her blanket

In the UK, a teenage girl has died after she sprayed and inhaled deodorant in her bedroom. Her parents are calling for clearer food labels to warn of hazards. Writes about it New York Post.

In May 2022, 14-year-old Georgia Green suffered a cardiac arrest and died from inhaling deodorant fumes, which her parents said was preventable.

“People don't know how dangerous the contents of these jars can be. I wish no one else in the country - or in the world - had to go through what we went through, ”said the girl's father, Paul.

"We don't want our daughter's death to be in vain," he added.

All spray deodorants have a "keep out of the reach of children" warning printed on them, but Georgia's parents say the warning label on the container was small.

The British Aerosol Manufacturers Association responded by saying that deodorants have "very clear warnings".

According to her father, Georgia was autistic and liked to spray deodorant on her blanket before wrapping herself in it.

“The smell gave her a certain sense of relaxation,” he said. “If she felt any anxiety, she would spray this spray and it gave her a feeling of comfort because this is the deodorant that my wife used.”

The girl's older brother was the one who found her unresponsive in her room with the door wide open. The coroner determined that the cause of her death was "not exactly due to aerosol inhalation".

Her parents set up a fundraising page to spread the word that the toxic chemicals found in such products can be deadly.

“A lot of people asked how we could help. “What we really want is to raise awareness about the dangers of aerosol products in the home,” the parents of the deceased girl wrote. “We hope this will prevent further tragedies from happening again.” Now our greatest wish is that the passing of beloved Georgia will not be in vain.”

Another British teenager who was also obsessed with spray deodorant died in the same way in 2016.

Thomas Townsend, 16, was found unconscious by police in his bedroom at an orphanage in Folkestone. Authorities found 42 empty aerosol cans of deodorant, hairspray and other products in the room. It was determined that the cause of his death was butane gas poisoning.
