A teenage girl found a hidden camera in an airplane toilet: her family filed a lawsuit

The parents of a 14-year-old girl are suing American Airlines because they say a male flight attendant hid his cellphone to secretly film their daughter in the restroom on a plane flying from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Boston in September. (Massachusetts). Writes about this The Washington Post.

According to the lawsuit, on Sept. 2 during a flight, a flight attendant taped an iPhone to the toilet lid and began recording just before the North Carolina teen entered the restroom.

The document states that the airline "knew or should have known that the flight attendant posed a danger." Other crew members did not confiscate the employee's phone after the girl complained about the incident, giving the flight attendant time to destroy the alleged evidence.

Lawyer John Robert Burik, who is representing the girl's family, said the incident "is aggravated by the fact that the actions alleged in the lawsuit were committed by an individual hired by the airline to protect this young girl."

“In the three months since the incident, no one from American Airlines has bothered to contact my client or find out about her well-being. This cannot be allowed to happen again,” Burik emphasized.

American Airlines said in a statement: "We take this matter very seriously and are cooperating with law enforcement authorities in the investigation as safety and security are our highest priorities."

The airline said the flight attendant had not worked since being notified of the incident, but did not respond to questions about whether he was employed by the company.

The alleged incident occurred mid-flight while the teenager and her family were visiting her brother in Boston. While she was waiting to use the bathroom in economy class, a flight attendant approached her and told her to use the bathroom at the front of the plane in first class, the complaint states.

After taking her there, the flight attendant allegedly entered the restroom before the teenager and told him that he needed to wash his hands before starting to clear the trash. About a minute later, he came out of the restroom and, according to the complaint, told the girl, “The toilet seat there is broken. But don't worry about it. We'll fix it when we get back to Charlotte."

The girl, the lawsuit says, saw that the toilet lid was sealed with red tape with the inscription SEAT BROKEN. She closed the door and relieved herself, but when she tried to flush the toilet, she said she discovered a phone hidden under the tape with the camera flash on.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff, identified only as Jane Doe, "was shocked and scared."

“It immediately occurred to her that someone had put a phone there to film her using the toilet. The girl then took a photo of that phone with her gadget,” the lawsuit says.

As soon as she left the toilet, the flight attendant entered it again, closed the door, and the girl returned to her seat, where she informed her parents about what had happened.

The father insisted on looking at the flight attendant's phone number. The lawsuit says he witnessed a flight attendant "furiously tapping" on the screen of his device and then handing it over. The father, according to the lawsuit, did not see any suspicious or questionable videos or photographs.

“The flight attendant had ample time to delete or hide any incriminating images or videos on his phone,” the lawsuit states.

According to the family, an FBI agent soon told the girl's parents that they did not arrest the man because they did not find images of their child on his phone.

The lawsuit says the teen became “nervous and fearful” around other people. She reportedly suffers from nightmares and insomnia, has difficulty concentrating on schoolwork, and fears a flight attendant may have distributed videos or photographs of her to other people. According to the lawsuit, she is receiving treatment for her injury.
