Dozens of hospitalized: FDA extended recall of salmonella-infected peaches

Peach recall has expanded across the country. It now includes peach puree and all products containing this fruit. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) decided to expand the recall after 78 people in 12 states were poisoned by salmonella, believed to be found in peaches. Writes about it CNN.

Of the 78 reported cases of the disease associated with potentially spoiled fruit, 29 were hospitalized between June 3 and August 23, according to the CDC. No deaths were reported. The age of the victims ranged from one to 92 years.

The agency warns that new poisoning with salmonella is possible. “Illnesses may not yet be reported due to the lag between the time a person becomes ill and when they are reported, averaging 2 to 4 weeks,” the CDC said. "Epidemiological evidence suggests peaches are the likely source of this outbreak."

Last week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the fruit that has caused the outbreak in several states has been shipped to retailers in more than 30 states by California-based Prima Wawona or Wawona Packing Company LLC, and this number could rise.

To date, more than a dozen companies have recalled peaches or products made from them, including Aldi, Food Lion, Hannaford, Kroger, Target, Walmart, Wegmans, and Russ Davis Wholesale.

Packaged peaches, jams and all products containing peaches labeled Perfectly Peach Salsa are under recall.

"If you can't tell where the peaches came from, don't eat them," the CDC warned. "Don't eat food made from these peaches."

CDC strongly recommends: Clean and disinfect any surfaces the peaches may have come into contact with to prevent cross-contamination. These include cutting boards, countertops, refrigerators and storage boxes.

The FDA said the possibly contaminated fruit has been distributed to retail stores in 34 states: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

"The FDA investigation is ongoing to determine the source of this outbreak and to determine if the potentially contaminated product has been shipped to other stores," the CDC said.

Health and regulatory officials in several states and Canada are also investigating peach-related infections.

According to the CDC, salmonella poisoning can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria and last four to seven days. Children under five years of age, people over 65 and with a weakened immune system are more prone to serious illness.
