Ten inexpensive cars that experienced drivers recommend buying

It's no secret that people are spending truly absurd amounts of money on new cars these days. But what's even more discouraging is that automakers continue to remove less expensive cars from their lineups. This makes it even more difficult to find new cars that you can afford. However, that doesn't mean you're out of luck.

Consumer Reports recently published a list of 10 inexpensive cars that are recommended to buy. But this list doesn't consist of well-reviewed cars sorted by suggested retail price. Instead, Consumer Reports analyzed deal prices as dealers continue to sell many of their more affordable models above the suggested retail price.

The study ranked the machines by average transaction price. Therefore, this price is more likely to reflect the amount you will pay the dealer.

Ford Maverick XL FWD

The suggested retail price of the Ford Maverick XL FWD is $22. But the demand for this car is still high enough that dealers are still making good markups on it. On average, it costs $595 more than the recommended retail price. This means that this car will cost you $2068.

Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE CVT

The suggested retail price for the Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE CVT is $23. On average, people pay an extra $155, bringing the average purchase price to $1463.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE

The suggested retail price for the Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE is $23. But be prepared to pay a $050 dealer markup to get the Corolla Hybrid. The average transaction price will reach $1499.

Mazda 3 2.5S

The MSRP for the Mazda 3 2.5 S is $22. But you'll probably have to add an additional $550, bringing the car to $1898.

Chevrolet Trailblazer LS

The Chevrolet Trailblazer LS starts at $22, exceeding MSRP. Expect to pay the dealer $100 more. As a result, the average price will increase to $1555.

Nissan Kicks S

The Nissan Kicks S has to be one of the cheapest cars on this list, as it has an MSRP of $20. In fact, it has the highest average markup on this list at $590. That means you'll pay $2972 to have Kicks in your driveway.

Kia Soul LX IVT

The Kia Soul LX IVT costs even less than the Kicks at $19. But like the Kicks, it still sells at a hefty premium. You'll likely pay $890 over MSRP. This means the car will actually cost you around $2224.

Subaru Impreza

The manual Subaru Impreza has an even lower base price than the Kia Soul. But good luck with your purchase at the suggested retail price of $19. You'll probably have to pay about $795 on top of that. This means the car will cost closer to $2041.

Volkswagen Jetta S

The price of a Volkswagen Jetta S with a manual transmission starts at $20. You probably won't get the discount you get on the Buick Encore GX, but you won't see the markups as big as the rest of the cars on this list either. With an average markup of $655, you can get this car for about $466.
