US Department of Transportation allows air passengers to be weighed
The US Department of Transportation made a decision in favor of Hawaiian Airlines, which began to weigh passengers and assign them seats in the cabin according to their weight.
Previously, Hawaiian Airlines, in response to an increase in the average weight of passengers, banned from the Internet choosing seats on the ship, and also demanded to be weighed before boarding. The airline reported that it is necessary to comply with the rules of the manufacturer of aircraft Boeing 767.
A pair of American businessmen filed a a complaint to the US Department of Transportation after they were weighed before boarding a flight from Honolulu and assigned specific places.
The airline took this step because American Samoa has the highest obesity rate in the world. 74,6% of the adult population is obese, according to data for 2007-2008 of the year. More recent data suggests that obesity can now reach 94%.
After a 6-month study, Hawaiian Airlines "found that the average weight of passengers and their carry-on baggage was 13,5 pounds heavier than expected." This became the reason for the introduction of new rules.
But the new policy has sparked complaints from passengers who say people from American Samoa are being targeted because of their weight. But the US Department of Transportation doesn't think so. Their spokesperson, Caitlin Harvil, responded: "What they are doing is logically the most reasonable decision under the unique circumstances."
