“This worries me greatly because we don’t spy on our friends,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said in response to a Wall Street Journal report that suggested U.S. intelligence was taking a special interest in Greenland.
According to the publication, American intelligence agencies have been instructed to focus their efforts on the movement for independence of the semi-autonomous territory of Greenland, as well as on US plans to extract minerals on the island.

US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard accused the paper of trying to “discredit” President Trump by “politicizing and leaking classified information.” She did not deny this, but said the paper was “violating the law and undermining our nation’s security and democracy.”
Rasmussen, who was at a meeting of EU ministers in Warsaw, called the publication "somewhat alarming."
"The US Chargé d'Affaires should be called to see if this information can be confirmed," he said.
There has been no decisive denial from officials, and that worries me.”
The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) declined to comment for the article, but told local media that it had “naturally” taken note of the US interest in Greenland. The agency noted that the threat of espionage against Greenland and Denmark had increased due to the international attention to the island.
President Trump has repeatedly said he intends to take control of Greenland. In an interview with NBC News, he said he would not rule out using military force to seize the Arctic island.
"I'm not saying I'm going to do it, but I'm not ruling anything out," he said. "We really need Greenland. There are a few people there that we'll take care of and value. But we need it for international security."
In March, Trump told the US Congress: “One way or another, we’re going to get it.”
Danish officials condemned US Vice President J.D. Vance's visit to Greenland in March. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the visit to a remote US military base "an absolutely unacceptable pressure on Greenland, its politicians and its people."
President Joe Biden, in his first interview since leaving office in January, denounced Trump's calls to return the Panama Canal, acquire Greenland and make Canada the 51st U.S. state.
"What the hell is going on here? What kind of president would say that? It's not us," Biden told BBC News. "We're for freedom, democracy, opportunity, not confiscation."

Greenland, the world's largest island, has been under Danish rule for about 300 years. It decides its own domestic policy, but foreign policy and defense are handled by Copenhagen.
The US has long been interested in the island. It has housed a US military base since World War II. Trump may also be interested in the rare earth minerals that could be mined there.
Polls show that the vast majority of Greenlanders want independence from Denmark, but do not want to become part of the United States.
