Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil predicted when spring would come

A long winter awaits us - this is the forecast given by all Americans' favorite meteorologist, the groundhog. Writes about this USA Today.

Punxsutawney Phil crawled out of his hole and saw his shadow on February 2 morning in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. It happened, as always, in front of a large crowd on Groundhog Day, when the whole country was looking forward to what he would predict.

Groundhog Club President Tom Dunkel "translated" the prediction to the whole world.

Phil spotted his shadow, which means there will be six more weeks of winter in the US. Much of the country is already dealing with another severe winter storm.

This is the third year in a row that the groundhog has spotted its shadow. He had done this often since he first announced the coming of spring in 1887. Of the 127 recorded times Phil predicted the weather, he saw his shadow 107 (84%) times. The longest period when he managed to do this continuously is still 31 years: from 190 to 1933.

It will take some time to figure out if Phil's prediction is right, but given the history of his predictions, Groundhog is most likely wrong.

According to the weather almanac Stormfax, Phil was only right 39% of the time. Predicting the arrival of spring for an entire country, especially with regional climates as diverse as the United States, is not easy.

However, that doesn't stop the inner circle of the Punxsutawnoon Groundhog Club - the group that puts on the annual event and takes care of Phil - from celebrating their hero. Club members say the groundhog's prediction is correct: "Of course, 100% of the time!"
