Delegation of Knesset Members Visits Jewish Communities in North America
Eight members of the Israeli Parliament visited the Jewish communities of New York and New Jersey as part of a trip organized by Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and the Jewish Agency for Israel.
The purpose of the visit was to familiarize the parliamentarians with the richness and diversity of Jewish community life in North America, the challenges faced by the communities, and the projects of the Jewish Federations in support of Israel. The MPs also met with the Sokhnut envoys to the US to learn about their work to strengthen the younger generation's connection to Israel.
The trip was attended by Knesset members Michal Woldiger (“Religious Zionism”), Evgeny Sova (“NDI”), Yitzhak Pindrus (“Ya’adut HaTorah”), Ohad Tal (“Religious Zionism”), Orit Farkash-Hacohen (“National Unity”) , Sharon Nir (“NDI”), Shalom Danino (“Likud”) and Vladimir Beliak (“Yesh Atid”).
During the trip, the Knesset members held several meetings with leaders of Jewish communities; discussed with the students of Hillel (a Jewish student organization) and the emissaries of the Sokhnut the fight against anti-Semitism on university campuses; talked to the chairman of the Jewish Agency Doron Almog; visited the United Nations together with Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan; held a dialogue with NYPD officers about community safety issues; and also met with the directors of the largest Jewish federations in New York and New Jersey.
"Personal experiences and face-to-face conversations are critical to Israeli leaders' understanding of North American Jewry," said the board chairman. Jewish Federations of North America Julie Platt. “By promoting dialogue based on mutual understanding and respect, we strengthen the ties between North American Jews and Israel and work together to address the challenges facing both of our communities.”
“When we talk about Jewish unity, we talk about an inextricable bond based on understanding each other,” said Mark Wilf, chairman of the Jewish Agency Board of Trustees. “I was pleased to meet with a delegation of Knesset members who came to explore the unique dynamics of American Jewish life. There is no substitute for face-to-face interaction to achieve true understanding and strengthen the unity that has sustained our people for generations.”
