CIA will be headed for the first time by a woman: who is Gina Haspel

US President Donald Trump 13 March fired Rex Tillerson from the post of Secretary of Stateby appointing former CIA head Mike Pompeo to this position.

And Gina Haspel will take his place at the head of the intelligence department, becoming the first woman in history to lead the CIA, writes Newsweek. According to the media the new head of the CIA was responsible for torture at the secret Cat's Eye prison.

“After 30 years of service as a Central Intelligence Agency officer, I have had the honor of serving as Deputy Director Mike Pompeo for the past year. “I am grateful to President Trump for the opportunity and confidence in me in his decision to appoint me as the next Director of the Central Intelligence Agency,” Haspel said.

When she was appointed deputy director of the agency in February 2017, many agency officials found this decision erroneous, noting that in 2002, Haspel was supervising the now-banned CIA program on using violent tactics to interrogate terror suspects, including putting people in coffins, depriving them of sleep and imitation drowning.

The publication reports that Gina Haspel at the end of her service in Thailand was the chief of staff of the head of the Counter-Terrorism Center of the Ministry.

Mike Pompeo praised her skills and professional skills.

“Gina is an exemplary intelligence officer and a dedicated patriot who has served the Agency for more than 30 years. She is also a proven leader with an uncanny ability to achieve success and inspire those around her. We are fortunate to have someone of her intellect, skill and experience as our deputy director,” Pompeo said in February 2017, when Haspel was appointed as his deputy.
