What will Netanyahu suggest at the meeting with Obama

Netanyahu will meet with US President Barack Obama during his three-day official visit to the United States. The meeting will begin at 9: 30 local time and last for at least an hour and a half.

Israeli media report that the focus of attention during the talks between the two leaders will be on US military assistance to Israel after the signing of an agreement between the leading powers and Iran, as well as stagnation in the Arab-Israeli diplomatic process.

According to the information published by the correspondents of the portal Ynet Itamar Eichner and Yitzhak Ben-Horin, the head of government intends to ask Obama to provide Israel with a squadron of F-15 combat aircraft, aerial refueling aircraft, helicopters, precision-guided munitions, V-22 tiltrotors, as well as Hetz-3 complexes. In addition, Israel will ask to increase annual aid from three to five billion dollars.

According to observers, Obama will not agree to immediately satisfy all Israeli requests, and after meeting with Netanyahu, negotiations will begin between the countries on a new ten-year cooperation agreement, under which the US will increase the size of military aid. This will provide an opportunity for Israel to maintain military superiority over potential adversaries in the region.

The topic of negotiations with Palestine will be discussed against the backdrop of a statement made by US Presidential Adviser for the Middle East Robert Mali. According to him, “it has become clear that unless dramatic surprises occur, a final agreement between Israel and the Palestinians will not be achieved during President Obama’s tenure, since the parties are not ready to negotiate on this issue.”

However, as reported by Barak Ravid in the newspaper Ha'aretz, Netanyahu will present a series of proposals to President Obama for “goodwill steps” regarding Palestine. The goal of these steps, developed by the coordinator of Israel's actions in Judea and Samaria, Major General Yoav Mordechai, is to “reduce tensions and improve the atmosphere.”

In addition, during the meeting will discuss the situation in Syria, as well as the fate of the Israeli intelligence officer Jonathan Pollard, who should be released from the American prison 20 in November. According to the Israeli media, Netanyahu will ask Obama to provide an opportunity for Pollard to repatriate to Israel after his release. Observers believe that Netanyahu’s request will be denied.

Netanyahu and Obama will meet for the first time in the past year: the last meeting between them took place on October 1 2014 of the year, and the current visit of the Prime Minister to the United States was prepared by the head of the National Security Council Yosi Cohen, who visited Washington the day before.
