What to do if a US passport is lost or stolen abroad
A passport as an identity document takes on even more weight abroad, where it is used for return plane tickets, hotel tickets, and much more.
But what to do if it was stolen in another country, or you lost it? The US government has prepared detailed instructions how to act in such a situation.
You must replace your passport before returning to the United States. To do this, contact the nearest US embassy or consulate. This information is available on the pages: Country Specific Information и USembassy.gov.
Notify the consular department of the loss or theft of your passport. If you are the victim of a more serious crime, inform the consul about this so that you can be given appropriate assistance. If you have a trip to a third country in the near future, tell the consul all the details.
From the consulate you will be directed to a place where you can take a photo for a new passport. But, if you have the opportunity, it is better to take a photo before visiting the consulate.
If your relative abroad informed you about the theft or loss of his passport, contact the US Department of State's Citizenship Office at 1-888-407-4747.
There, your relative or friend will be contacted by the embassy or consulate nearest to him, where he will apply for a passport replacement.
What you need to replace a passport abroad
Going to the consulate to get a new passport, you must take with you:
- a photo for passport;
- identity card (right, expired passport, etc.);
- proof that you are a US citizen (birth certificate, copy of your lost passport);
- train or plane tickets confirming your trip;
- a police report on a crime, if any;
- An application DS-11 Application for Passport (it can be filled already in the consulate);
- form DS-64 Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport (can be filled in the consulate).
When filling out an application for the loss or theft of a passport, you will need to report, in writing or verbally, details of how this happened. In this case, a police report about the theft or loss may be useful, but it is not a mandatory requirement of the consulate, so don’t waste time getting it if you have a flight scheduled for the near future, which you can skip.
How long does a replaced passport work?
Replaced passport is valid for 10 years after replacement for adults and 5 for children. If you have a planned trip in the near future, the consulate can issue an urgent passport to help you fly to another country or return to the United States. After returning to the US, you must submit a temporary passport and apply for a permanent passport.
If you are the victim of theft not only of your passport, but also of money, and need a loan from the State Department, this can also be the reason for issuing a temporary passport. After returning the debt you will be able to apply for a permanent passport.
Payment of replacement passport
Payment for the replacement of a passport is made by the applicant. If he is unable to pay for the document, he will be asked to give a list of people in the United States who, in his opinion, will be able to help him cover these costs. Information about sending money abroad and financial assistance to US citizens abroad can be found on the pages: Financial Assistance to US citizens abroad и Sending Money Overseas to US Citizen in an Emergency.
At the same time, if you are a victim of a serious crime or have lost your passport due to a natural phenomenon or another mass tragedy, a temporary passport can be issued for free. When you return to the United States, you can apply for a permanent passport, for which you will be charged.
Can I get a replacement passport on weekends or holidays
Most embassies and consulates do not work on weekends or holidays, therefore, new passports are not issued on these days. However, in all embassies around the clock there is a duty officer who deals with the solution of urgent issues related to life and death. You can contact him if you are a victim of a serious crime.
