What to do if you lose or steal a US passport
In the event of the loss or theft of a US passport, its holder must immediately report the incident to the authorities in order to protect themselves from theft of personal data.
You can do this in three ways:
- on the phone 1-877-487-2778 (Tty 1-888-874-7793);
- by regular mail by sending a form application DS-64 to the address indicated in it;
- on the site by filling out the form DS-64 Online.
After you report a lost or stolen passport, the document will be considered invalid and cannot be used for international travel.
You can replace your passport right away or do it later. In order to do this, you need to visit one of the passport centers and submit a form DS-11.
If you are in the United States and plan to fly out of the country for the next 2 weeks or earlier, you need to make an appointment at one of the passport agencies.
If you are in the US, but do not plan to fly out of the country for the next 2 weeks, you need to make an appointment at one of the passport reception centers.
If you are abroad at the time of loss or theft of your identity card, you should contact the nearest US embassy or consulate. Use also the information in the section "FAQ".
