What to read, watch and listen to this summer: tips from Bill Gates

Bill Gates published his annual summer reading list, and it had its own twist. The billionaire said in his блогеthat this year he decided to “mix everything up”, “because there is more to life than just reading”, reports Insider.

Unlike previous years, when Gates shared a few book recommendations, the Microsoft co-founder has now listed one of his favorite TV shows and a few songs for the summer, in addition to a few books he loved.

History follows two friends, Sam and Sadie, who become successful video game developers but face moral dilemmas and struggle to maintain their partnership.

Gates said he enjoyed the book, even though he doesn't consider himself a gamer. The billionaire said the book shows "how creative partnerships can be wonderful and challenging in equal measure." The book reminded him of his relationship with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

“The chapter describing how Sam and Sadie worked until the sun rose in a dingy apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts, could just as easily be about how Paul and I came up with the idea for Microsoft,” Gates said in his blog. “Like Sam and Sadie, we worked together every day for years. Paul's vision and contributions to the company were absolutely critical to its success, and he then decided to move on. We had a great relationship, but not without some of the challenges that success brings,” he said.

Gates also recommended non-fiction book. It describes six centuries of African history in a way that rethinks and “challenges standard Western notions of the continent,” Gates said in a blog post.

“If you are interested in learning more about the history of Africa, its central role in the world, and how both have been misunderstood in the West, I highly recommend Born in Blackness,” Gates wrote.

Borgen

Gates said he has watched all four seasons of the Danish political drama "Borgen."

The series follows Birgitta Nyborg, a fictional prime minister who is Denmark's first female leader as she comes to power and tries to balance the nation's multi-party system.

“They ask a lot of questions—about political compromise, juggling work, media responsibility, and what it means to be a good parent—and are not interested in giving easy answers,” Gates wrote in his blog about the series. “I highly recommend it to anyone interested in politics, coalition building, and the triumphs and challenges of leadership,” he wrote.

Gates also took the opportunity to share his summer playlist on Spotify, which he joked was "not too bad for grandpa."

It includes 34 songs from a wide variety of artists, from Willie Nelson and The Beatles to Vampire Weekend and Maroon 5. Gates said on his blog that some of his "most favorite childhood memories" include listening to records in Allen's basement.
