Chicago stuffed rats: what happens to the city
If you live or come to a large American city, most likely you have already seen them. After the wool rodent became famous for being calm dragged a slice of pizza in the New York subway and was nicknamed “Pizza Rat”; New York was unanimously recognized as the capital of rats in the United States. But it looks like Chicago has taken that dubiously honorable title away from him.
According to a new study, the number of complaints to city services about rodents increased by 55% from 2014 to 2017 - from 32855 to 50963 per year, writes USA Today. The question examined housing search resource RentHop.com, comparing complaints from Windy City residents with those from Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. It was found that Chicago topped the list with 1876.09 complaints per 100 thousand residents, almost twice as many as the US capital, and also led the overall ranking, beating New York by more than 31 thousand complaints.
“The abundance of trash and abandoned buildings in the Windy City makes it an excellent place for rats to find shelter and food for survival,” writes RentHop, which is active in the four cities. “The presence of these creatures poses a threat to residents due to their ability to spread disease and cause allergic reactions in people and animals.”
Complaints against rats in 2017 by city are sorted in descending order of the number of complaints for every 100 000 residents.
However, the Chicago Department of Public Utilities told The Chicago Tribune that a high level of complaints does not necessarily indicate a high infection rate in rats.
“Rodent complaints are not an accurate indicator of the rat population in an area,” said Public Utilities Department spokeswoman Maryani Williams. “However, the complaints show that Chicagoans care about the health and safety of their community,” adding that the department is vigilant on this issue and encourages residents to report rodent activity for a quick response.
In addition, Williams said that the actual number of complaints was 42 670, including repeated appeals.
Recently, we wrote that in New York counted a shocking number of rats. But the video with the very rodent from New York, who loves pizza.
The study, published by PhD at Columbia University, counted about two million rats in New York City, where more than 8,5 million people live. New York State Department of Health workers use dry ice to put it in rat holes. The ambient air temperature ensures that carbon dioxide turns into a gaseous form and suffocates rats that usually sleep at this time of day. Usually from 90 to 100 percent of rodents perish.
