In a month, it will be difficult to live in the US without Real ID

Starting May 7, U.S. residents will not be able to fly domestically unless they have a Real ID. They will not be able to enter certain federal facilities or enter the grounds of a nuclear power plant, according to CNBC.

The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 to strengthen domestic air travel security after the 11/2008 terrorist attacks. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has repeatedly delayed the law's initial implementation in XNUMX, but experts say it is likely to be finalized this year.

Now is a "crucial moment," according to Nick Yuen, senior editorial director of The Points Guy, a site and brand that specializes in reviews and advice on using airline, hotel and credit card rewards programs.

“Anyone planning to fly within the United States in the coming months should make every effort to obtain a certificate that meets the requirements of the Real id. Or you should travel with a passport even within the country,” he advises.

If you don't have a Real ID yet, you may run into trouble as the deadline approaches. Yuen says departments of motor vehicles (DMVs) are already overwhelmed with requests for Real ID appointments.

“We’ve seen reports of long lines and a lack of available slots,” he says. “For example, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has an online appointment facilitator — and for those who are not eligible for renewal within the next three months, there are exactly zero appointments available.”

When you do get an appointment, be sure to come prepared. Before you go to the DMV, check what documents you need, as requirements vary by state. The Department of Homeland Security has a handy guide on its website map with links to DMV every state and territory in the United States where you can make an appointment.

In most states, a Real ID costs no more than a regular driver's license. But some places charge extra. Pennsylvania, for example, charges an additional one-time fee of $30.
