US authorities are detaining more illegal immigrants at the northern border
After President Donald Trump stepped up crackdowns on illegal immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, Border Patrol agents in the north are seeing a sharp increase in attempted border crossings, according to Fox News.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Houlton, Maine, reported May 2 that it had conducted targeted enforcement operations over the previous 10 days, resulting in the apprehension of 39 illegal immigrants.
During these operations, foreign nationals from Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and China were arrested.

The agency has already apprehended more illegal immigrants in Maine this year than it will in all of 2024, immigration officials say.
“The U.S. Border Patrol will continue to conduct operations to arrest, prosecute, and, when appropriate, deport aliens who violate the law,” said Acting Houlton Sector Chief Craig Shapley. “These efforts are intended to help keep Maine and the United States safe.”
Some of those arrested have criminal histories, including violent crimes, illegal possession of weapons and theft, officials said.
One of the illegal immigrants was charged with illegal reentry into the United States, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison, with possible increased penalties if the person has previously been deported following criminal convictions.

CBP has warned of consequences for other illegal migrants who may be considering crossing the border from the north.
"Ensuring the security and integrity of our nation's borders is the primary mission of the U.S. Border Patrol. We use every means available to us to achieve this goal," the agency said in a press release.
