Costco Canned Tuna Recalled Over Botulism Risk
Canned tuna sold in major grocery stores in 26 states and the District of Columbia has been recalled due to a risk of botulism. The problem is due to defective packaging, according to manufacturer Tri-Union Seafoods and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), writes NPR.

The California-based company voluntarily recalled 13 products and advised consumers to exercise extreme caution if they purchased the products. The canned fish were sold at stores including Costco, Trader Joe's, Kroger, Safeway, Harris Teeter, Walmart and Publix.
Three important points:
- Tri-Union Seafoods announced a recall of Genova, Van Camp's, HEB and Trader Joe's brand canned tuna on Feb. 7. The FDA released information about the recall this week.
- The affected products were said to have defective "easy-to-open" packaging that could cause the seal to break over time or lead to contamination with the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.
- This bacterium can cause food poisoning when a contaminated product is consumed, which is extremely dangerous and can lead to a serious illness called botulism, which often leads to death. So far, no cases of infection associated with the recalled products have been recorded.
What to do

If you suspect you have purchased one of the recalled cans, the company recommends returning it to the store for a refund, throwing it away, or contacting Tri-Union Seafoods for a return kit and coupon.
Even if the tuna looks or smells normal, it should be thrown away, the company said. Anyone who has consumed the product is advised to seek immediate medical attention.
