Former US Vice President Biden said that there is no progress in Ukraine in the fight against corruption
Former US Vice President Joe Biden supported the decision of the 45 administration of US President Donald Trump to provide Ukraine with lethal weapons, which, in his opinion, will help to more actively counteract Russian aggression.
Speaking to the US Council on Foreign Relations, the politician said that since the beginning of the military conflict in Ukraine, he has advocated the provision of weapons to this country, reports “Voice of America".
At the same time, Biden noted that corruption is still the biggest problem in Ukraine. He recommended that the Trump administration officials carefully record what the Ukrainians say and do not say, and also check how they keep their promises.
“I am very worried about the regression in the fight against corruption in Kyiv. Here's one specific example. I was given an assignment in Ukraine. I remember going there to convince our team that we should provide Ukraine with long-term loan guarantees. I went to Kyiv 12-13 times, and finally had to announce that we were offering another billion dollars in loan guarantees. I received promises from Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk that they would take steps against the prosecutor general, but they did not,” Biden said.
After that, according to him, he had a confrontation with representatives of the Ukrainian authorities.
“I went to a press conference and said: we are not giving you a billion dollars. They tell me: you don’t have such powers, you are not the president, the president said he would give it. My answer: call him. I said you're not getting a billion dollars. I'm leaving in 6 hours, if your prosecutor general is not fired by then, you won't get any money. And that son of a bitch was fired, and in his place they put someone who was trusted at that time,” the politician shared his memories.
He noted that the Anti-Corruption Court still does not work in Ukraine, although representatives of the authorities promised that this structure would work.
