A wild bison weighing approximately 900 kg gored a tourist and threw him into the air about two and a half meters. This occurred on July 10 at a campground in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. A professional photographer captured the incident, describing the animal as "irritated, enraged, and attacking everything in sight," according to reports. The Guardian.

The man suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a male bison while walking with his grandson at the Bridge Bay Campground south of Fishing Bridge.

The US National Park Service (NPS), which manages Yellowstone, is not releasing details of the attack.

However, professional photographer Mike MacLeod from Bozeman, Montana, gave a detailed account of the incident to the Cowboy State Daily newspaper and provided the publication with a video recording, which was then published on YouTube.

MacLeod said he was camping with his wife when she spotted the bison approaching.

"I just wanted to get some spectacular footage of this bison going wild," MacLeod explained. "It completely changed my perception of what to expect from them this time of year. I never imagined that was possible."

According to the photographer, the bison "started walking right through the campsite. He headed toward a group of kids who were taking photos of him on their phones from a good distance away, and then charged at them."

MacLeod said the animal continued to run around the camp, and campers shouted warnings to each other. At that moment, the man who was later injured walked out onto the road while the bison lay in the dust.

"He lay in the dust with his head turned towards the road, as bison do," MacLeod noted.

The footage shows the grandfather and grandson taking out their phones and pointing the cameras at the bison, apparently from several dozen meters away, after which the animal begins to rise.

"Grandfather said, 'It's time to go,' and they went behind the trees," MacLeod recounts.

The bison then became distracted by the pickup truck and charged at it, forcing the driver to slam on the gas and drive away.

"The driver saw it and simply didn't stop," MacLeod said. After that, the bison moved on to where the man and his grandson were hiding among the trees.

The grandson managed to escape, but the bison chased after his grandfather, ran around him and threw him into the air.

"The bison caught him in the thigh with its left horn and threw him into the air," MacLeod explained. "The man flipped over and landed on his side. The animal was just under two meters tall."

MacLeod tried to distract him: "I was afraid he was going to start butting the guy on the ground, so I stopped filming, ran towards him and yelled, trying to look as big and menacing as possible."

Other witnesses did the same, after which the bison retreated.

According to MacLeod, the victim's grandson said his grandfather had "very serious injuries and remains in serious condition."

Yellowstone National Park's website emphasizes that the animals here are "wild and dangerous, no matter how calm they appear," and the safest way to view them is from a car.

Visitors are advised to stay at least 100 meters away from bears, wolves, and cougars, and at least 25 meters away from other animals, including bison and elk.

"If an animal approaches, retreat to maintain a safe distance," the guidelines state. It is also noted that intentionally approaching or remaining near wild animals if it disturbs them or causes them to move is prohibited by law.

MacLeod emphasized that he observed the victim complying with park rules: "I didn't see anyone getting too close. People were yelling, 'Watch out, there's a bison coming through camp,' keeping their distance and being respectful."

The incident occurred during the rutting season, when males demonstrate their strength and endurance while competing for females.

"You could tell he was irritated, furious, and lashing out at everything," MacLeod said.

According to Cowboy State Daily, this is the second bison attack on a person in Yellowstone in 2026. The first occurred on June 26, when a 12-year-old child was injured in the Mud Volcano area, north of Fishing Bridge.

"The visitor sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel. The investigation is ongoing," the National Park Service said in a statement.
