A large black bear chased a group of hikers on a hiking trail in the park for more than a kilometer.

Jeffrey Zhou, 21, was walking with four friends along the Howe Sound Crest trail in Vancouver, Canada, when they spotted a large black bear. New York Post.

“We first spotted the bear when we caught a glimpse of a dark shadow coming out of the fog,” said an engineering student at the University of British Columbia.

“He was moving at a consistent pace, so we came back a little faster so as not to disturb him, keeping our distance from him,” Jeffrey said.

Zhou said the bear followed them at a leisurely pace for almost half an hour, forcing them to walk more than 1 km on the trail in the opposite direction until they could hide behind a bush.

“After about a kilometer, we were able to find a part of the trail that had a gradual uphill slope on the side,” Zhou continued. “I told my friends to climb up and hide behind the bushes.” They were scared and wanted to run."

Zhou said he was trained and knew how to respond to such situations in the wild.

“When we were hiding behind the bushes, I told my friends to take off their backpacks in case he attacked us,” he recalled. “I would throw bear spray on him and we would run towards him, maybe throwing our backpacks at him to put some distance between us.”

But there was no need for the bear spray because, according to Zhou, the bear passed the group without incident. He was at a distance of less than 5 meters from the group of friends.
