More than 60% of the world's inhabitants: how much money do all billionaires

All dollar billionaires in the world (total 2153 people) in total own more money than 4,6 billion of the poorest people on Earth. Such data are provided in a new study by Oxfam, a company specializing in the fight against poverty, writes Meduza.

The authors of the study also noted that the 22 richest people in the world in total have a greater fortune than all women in Africa (almost 600 million people). One percent of the world's richest people are richer than 6,9 billion.

The authors of the study note that in their opinion, this large separation is based on an imperfect and sexist economic system that appreciates the wealth of a few privileged, mostly men, writes Oxfam.

Taking care of others, preparing food, cleaning, collecting water and firewood are important everyday tasks for the well-being of societies, communities and the functioning of the economy. Heavy and unequal pay for care work perpetuates gender and economic inequalities.

“This has to change. Governments around the world must act now to build human economies that value what is truly important to society, rather than fueling the endless pursuit of profit and wealth,” the study authors say.

Investing in national systems and introducing progressive taxation, including taxing wealth and enacting laws in favor of caregivers, are possible and important first steps.
