More than a hundred Austrians received coronavirus financial aid from the United States: money is unlikely to be returned

In Austria, more than 100 people have received checks for $ 1200 "coronavirus aid" from the US Treasury Department. Most likely, the cause was a mistake in the American taxpayer database. Writes about it Hromadske.

Manfred Barnreiter, 73, from Linz, Austria, and his wife received checks from the US Treasury Department. At first he suspected fraud, but the bank confirmed that the checks were real and that you could actually get cash.

Barnreiter himself worked in the United States for several years in the 1970s, so theoretically information about him could somehow end up in the American base. But his wife has never been to the United States.

At least 108 such checks were received in Austria. Based on them, money was withdrawn from two banks in the country - Sparkasse and Raiffeisen Bank.

Raiffeisen Bank spokesman Paul Kaiser explained that the probable reason for the sending of these checks by the US Treasury Department was an error in the database. The American authorities can theoretically initiate a refund procedure, but it is so complicated that it is unlikely to come to that.

At the end of May, the US government agreed to provide $2 trillion in financial assistance for people who, due to the pandemic, were left without work and, accordingly, income. The money came in the form of checks of $1 for people with annual incomes of up to $200 and $70 for married couples.

Only US citizens and people with a US residency can apply for such assistance. Foreigners are not eligible to receive financial assistance.

However, as the American media reported back in August, thousands of foreigners who study or work in the United States on a temporary visa received checks. In addition, the same checks were written in the name of deceased people.
