More 260 migrants died while trying to get into the US
7-year-old death the girls in the illegal detention center appeared to be one of four deaths of people who died this month while trying to cross the US-Mexico border, and one of more than 260 deaths this year, according to an open government report received by ABC News.
This number reflects the death rate of migrants registered by border guards within their area of responsibility, and does not apply exclusively to persons in US custody.
For example, 50 deaths in 2018 were marked as "water-related", presumably by people who drowned trying to cross the border.
Another 27 people were discovered by the US authorities in the form of remains.
The greatest number of deaths occurred due to heat.
The numbers show a grim picture for caravans of migrants heading for the US border.

On Friday, US Customs and Border Protection confirmed that a child from Guatemala died shortly after giving up with his father at a remote border crossing in New Mexico.
7-year-old Makin arrived from Guatemala with her father as part of a group of 163 people, including 50 children, who were without parents or guardians, US Department of Homeland Security officials said.
According to the document, 2018 deaths were recorded in the 30 budget year, which ended on September 281. Since then, 32 more people have been found dead - a number that includes four in December.
The document says the vast majority of people killed in the last budget year - 117 - were migrants from Mexico. Another 116 people have not been identified. In 2018, 19 people died from Guatemala, 14 from Honduras and 8 from El Salvador.
The number of deaths actually represents a slight decline from previous years, including 2016, before President Donald Trump took office, when 329 migrant deaths were reported by border officials.
The document states that the numbers are “preliminary and subject to change”.
