Over 200 thousand users: Wikipedia launched a new social network without ads
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has launched the new WT: Social social network. Since launching in October, it already has over 200 000 users. Writes about this with the BBC.
The platform, as they promise now, will never sell user data, but will exist on donations to do without advertising.
You can register by invitation or by paying a subscription.
The network positions itself as a news platform. In addition, users will be able to edit part of the content, including headings that “mislead” readers.

The tape will be formed in chronological order. First, the latest news will appear, not the ones that can attract the attention of the audience.
Subscription costs $13 per month or $100 per year.
“We will give you the ability to curate content and edit misleading headlines,” WT: Social said in a statement. “We will create an environment where bad actors are removed because it is the right thing to do, not because it affects our bottom line.”
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Mr Wales called the advertising-driven business model supported by social media giants "problematic".
“Low-quality content has taken the lead,” he said.
In 2017, Jimmy Wales launched a crowdsourcing news platform called Wikitribune designed to deal with fake news.
However, in October 2018 dismissed its team of journalists.

WT: Social is a separate structure within Wikipedia.
According to social media specialist Zoe Cairns, the network will have to “step up quickly” to establish itself as a viable alternative to the giants.
“It will take a lot of money,” she said. — People are accustomed to free access to social networks. I think companies can pay, but ordinary people are used to getting news quickly and for free.”
