Bob Dylan didn't come to receive his Nobel, but he's glad to know that songs are literature

December 10 in Stockholm (Sweden) held the ceremony of awarding the Nobel Prize in literature for 2016 year, which was awarded to one of the most famous rock artists and songwriters Bob Dylan.

The musician himself could not come to the ceremony, but sent a letter with his Nobel speech, the text of which was published on the official Nobel Committee website.

Dylan expressed regret that he could not attend the ceremony, and admitted that it was a great honor for him to become a Nobel laureate.

“I could never have imagined or imagined that I would be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature,” Dylan wrote in his acceptance speech.

At the same time, the musician admitted that he had never in his life thought about whether the songs he wrote were literature, and thanked the Nobel Committee for the answer to this question.

“Never in my life have I had time to ask myself: “Are my songs literature?” So I say a huge thank you to the Swedish Academy for two things: for taking the time to answer this question, and for the fact that the answer was so wonderful,” Dylan said in his speech.

He also stressed that it is easier to conquer thousands of people with his works than a few people, therefore he really considers the recognition of his merit by the small Nobel Committee to be a great achievement.

“But there is one thing I have to say. I've played live for 50 thousand people and for 50 people, and I can tell you that it's harder to play for 50 people. 50 thousand people turn into a single organism, but 50 thousand do not. Each listener has his own, separate personality, his own world. They can perceive things more clearly. Your sincerity and how it relates to your talent is truly put to the test. I am aware of how few people are on the Nobel Committee,” the musician noted.

Due to the absence of Dylan, an American Jewish singer Patti Smith sang one of the songs of the winner of A Hard Rainʼs A-Gonna Fall at the awards ceremony.
