'Blessing of Liberty and the miracle of Christmas': Trump with the first lady lit the lights on the main Christmas tree
US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump lit holiday lights at the National Christmas Tree in Presidential Park in front of the White House. This solemn event took place on Thursday, December 5.
Tourists and residents until January 1 will be able to see the Christmas tree decorated with 50 000 lights and 450 giant decorations in the form of white stars.
President Trump, in his short speech, thanked the country's armed forces and those who provided first aid.
“At Christmas we remember this eternal truth: every person is a beloved child of God. As a grateful nation, we celebrate the joy of family, the blessing of freedom and the miracle of Christmas. On behalf of Melania and our entire family, Merry Christmas and God bless you all,” the president said.

The favorite tradition of lighting Christmas tree lights began over 90 years ago. On Christmas Eve in 1923, then US President Calvin Coolidge lit lights on an 48-foot (14,6-meter) fir tree from Vermont decorated with 2500 red, white, and green light bulbs.
This year, an 30-foot (9-meter) blue spruce arrived from Palmyra, PA.
Spruce arrived in Washington in late October and was under the care of the National Park Service.
According to the service, on the path surrounding the National Christmas Tree, 56 state trees are decorated with handmade ornaments unique to each tree.

The lights on the Christmas tree light from 16: 30 to 22: 00 from Sunday to Thursday until 23: 00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Free 30 minute concerts and dance performances from 11 to 15 December and from 17 to 22 December will take place on the stage.
