Bill Gates supported the FBI in conflict with Apple
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Microsoft’s founder said that he didn’t see the reasons why Apple should resist the FBI’s demand to crack a terrorist’s phone. The position of Gates is fundamentally different from the position of the leaders of other major technology corporations, who defended Tim Cook, who published an open letter in which he explained why he is not going to follow the demands of the American government.
The confrontation between Apple and the FBI went far beyond a single corporation and spread to representatives of most major technology companies. Last week for Tim Cook stood up for the head of Google, Sunder Pichay, and the head of WhatsApp, Jan Kum. During his speech at the Samsung presentation, Mark Zuckerberg also expressed support for Apple.
However, Bill Gates has a different position on this.
“Nobody talks about 'backdoor'. This is a separate case in which the state requests access to information. They do not ask for some common things, they talk about a particular situation.
Apple has access to this information, and they just don’t want to provide it. This is no different from the situation when requesting data from a telephone operator or making a request for banking information. It’s as if the bank wrapped the hard drive with a tape and said “don't make me cut this tape, because then I’ll have to do it many times,” Gates said.
Nevertheless, Gates agrees that this situation creates a precedent after which Apple will not be able to refuse to provide information on a similar request. In his understanding, this is a question for voters - are they ready for their data to be opened at the request of the government?
As previously wrote ForumDaily, confrontation began after the FBI openly asked Apple to crack the phone of a terrorist who committed an attack in San Bernardino. Tim Cook refused to do this, explaining that one such hacking would lead to the appearance of a 'backdoor', that is, a hacking mechanism for all other devices. And the company can not allow this.
