Zero waste war: Ukrainians turn containers from American missiles into acoustic systems

Ukrainian entrepreneurs from Vinnytsia use Javelin containers to produce loudspeakers. So they collect donations and give a second life to garbage. How it all happens, said the publication Tech League.

Maxim Guziy and Anastasia Chekalyuk are entrepreneurial spouses from Vinnitsa who, with the help of local engineers, turn used Javelin anti-tank missile systems into professional BOOMTank Acoustic loudspeakers. Thus, they collect donations for the army and medical needs.

How did the idea come about

Turning the garbage of war into columns was invented by Maxim at the end of 2022. Like many Ukrainians, he has many relatives and friends fighting at the front. To close their requests for help, Maxim and his wife created the ETIS.Help charity foundation. From time to time, the military give "souvenirs" to the volunteers. This happened with the first shipping container from the Javelin ATGM.

“When it came to us, the question arose of what to do from this box in order to get as much money as possible,” recalled Maxim Guziy. He saw many similar “souvenirs” from fellow volunteers that were used for fundraising auctions.

For example, he came across a container from Javelin, painted by a famous artist: "It's beautiful, but I don't see a practical use for such things." He also saw portable speakers from tubes from various anti-tank systems, but they had a dubious sound.

Thus, the idea was born to create a high-quality acoustic system in this container.

Technical Highlights

The weight of the BOOMTank speaker system is 46 kg. The technical part of the development was handled by the Vinnitsa team of Park Audio, which has been creating musical equipment for more than 25 years and has been collaborating with the Bez obmezhen group, singers Ruslana and Olya Polyakova.

According to Maxim, it is better to use their column in open areas, in offices or bars. In total, this system will easily satisfy the needs for high-quality sound for an audience of up to a hundred visitors.

“But to get high-quality sound, you need to use high-quality components. Our system uses turntables made in Italy and amplifiers made by our partners Park Audio,” he explained.

According to the entrepreneur, the main value of this system is intellectual. The company's engineers have been adapting and tuning it for a long time to get a great sound.

It was planned that all columns would be the same. However, even containers are slightly different from each other, so each unit is like a separate story.

“I am delighted with the work of engineers. Without them, this project would have been unequivocally impossible,” Maxim stressed.

Experts also appreciated the quality of the system. Singer Dmitry Monatik joined the project - he became its official ambassador and tested the first BOOMTank.

Winemaking

At present, engineers have made only one BOOWTank system, but four more will be ready in a week or two.

“One of them is for drawing in the current fundraising, and with others we plan to hold several more such collections through collaborations with opinion leaders. Perhaps outside of Ukraine,” Maxim shared.

It is simply impossible to buy such speakers. The first one could be won by taking part in the collection for an ambulance or instantly redeemed for 500 hryvnias, which was done by a Ukrainian - an IT specialist who now lives in the United States.

If entrepreneurs have more containers for production, it is planned to start selling these acoustic systems mainly to the Western market. All profits will be directed to support the defense forces. However, this is far from it, emphasizes Maxim.

It is difficult to say whether there is consistency in the issue of supplying containers.

Ecological principle

The creation of such projects, according to Maxim, has not only a charitable aspect, but also an environmentally friendly one.

“A year ago, there was information that the United States transferred to Ukraine more than 25 Javelin anti-tank systems in the form of assistance. Can you imagine? And how many other weapons have been delivered to the front line?” he asked rhetorically.

Each of them has its own container, which becomes unnecessary on the battlefield. Such things, as a rule, should be returned to the weapons depots, the entrepreneur explains. However, during the hot phase of the war, it is not always possible to do this, so spontaneous dumps are formed.

Wooden boxes are used for fires or locals take home for potatoes and stuff. But there are also a lot of plastic items. Therefore, the use of shipping containers is an opportunity to simultaneously help the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU) and prevent even more garbage pollution of the war territories.

“We are giving a second life to these containers,” Maxim sums up.
