Bezos and Branson have been in space, but they will not be given the titles of astronauts: what went wrong
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has changed the criteria for the Astronaut Title and Astronaut Wings Badge. It happened on the day of the flight into space of the founder of Amazon and the richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos. Writes about it iXBT.
According to the new rules, astronauts in the United States will now be called those who are part of the crew and make a significant contribution to flight safety. But what is considered a significant contribution is not specified. Before this, since 2004, astronauts were considered those who rose to a height of at least 80 km above the Earth.

Now, based on new rules, the FAA does not recognize Jeff Bezos and British billionaire Richard Branson as astronauts. The other crew members will not be promoted either. Only 82-year-old Wally Funk, a participant in the Mercury 13 female astronaut training program, can eventually receive the title of astronaut for her past achievements.
