Because of the resolution, Israel declared a boycott of UNESCO
Israel suspended cooperation with UNESCO after the organization adopted a resolution on the holy sites of Jerusalem.
A day earlier, the executive committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Commission (UNESCO) voted for a document denying the connection of the Jewish people with the Temple Mount, writes “Interfax«.
The resolution was put to the vote by Egypt and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA). The draft document speaks about the special connection of Islam with the Temple Mount and Jerusalem; the issue of the rights of Jews to these shrines is not in the document. The document condemns Israel for violating the rights of Muslims in Jerusalem; in particular, Israel is accused of not allowing Muslims to pray freely in mosques on the Temple Mount.
The executive committee of UNESCO includes representatives of 58 countries: 6 countries voted against the resolution, another 26 countries abstained, and 24 countries supported the resolution in the wording proposed by Egypt and the PNA.
In voting, Israel was supported by the United States, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Estonia and Germany.
The resolution was supported by the delegations of Russia, China, Algeria, Bangladesh, Morocco, Oman, Lebanon, Qatar, Iran, Mexico and other countries.
Among the abstaining countries were Sweden, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Ukraine, Albania, Argentina and others.
“The Theater of the Absurd at UNESCO continues”
After the vote, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called what was happening “a continuation of UNESCO’s theater of the absurd” and added that “the organization has lost the remnants of legitimacy.”
“To say that Israel has nothing to do with the Temple Mount or the Western Wall is like saying that China has nothing to do with the Great Wall of China and Egypt has nothing to do with the pyramids,” Netanyahu said.
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Israel to UNESCO, Carmel Shama ha-Cohen, was pleased that most European countries either opposed the resolution or abstained from voting. He particularly noted Sweden, which chose to abstain, despite the fact that it traditionally supports Palestinian resolutions in international bodies.
Trump said that under his potential administration, “the United States will recognize Jerusalem as the one true capital of Israel,” and that “Israel will have a true, loyal and enduring friend in the United States of America,” writes Mig News.
“Jerusalem is the strong capital of the Jewish people, and the overwhelming majority of Congress voted to recognize Jerusalem as it just did,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook on Thursday, hours after the vote, adding that the attempt “by the UN to reject the connection between the State of Israel and Jerusalem is a one-sided attempt to ignore Israel's 3000-year-old ties to its capital, and is further evidence of the UN's enormous anti-Israel bias."
Naftali Bennett, Israel’s Minister of Education, sent a letter to UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova, in which she accused the organization of ignoring the thousands of years of Jewish relations with Jerusalem. Air force.
He also accused UNESCO of supporting “Islamist terror.”
Bennett also heads the Israeli National Commission for Relations with UNESCO, the Israeli publication Haaretz reports. He informed the commission about the termination of all professional interactions with UNESCO.
