The White House is giving away free smartphones to illegal immigrants to keep them connected

The White House confirmed that illegal immigrants are being provided with electronic devices, in particular mobile phones, so that the administration of US President Joe Biden can "track and verify" them while they await their case in immigration court. Writes about it Fox News.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the purpose of the phone giveaway is to monitor illegal immigrants.

“We need to take steps to make sure we know where people are and can track them, contact them,” Psaki said.

“The Alternatives to Detention program that we use has three unique technologies to monitor participants enrolled in the program,” she explained. – Telephones are one of them. The participant's voice is used to create a biometric voiceprint during the registration process. And when the participant is called, their voice is compared to the voiceprint.”

“Smartlink, which is another option, allows participants to be monitored using a smartphone or tablet using face-matching technology for identity verification,” Psaki said.

She also mentioned the government's "Global Positioning System," which tracks the location and travel history of illegal immigrants awaiting trial using an ankle bracelet.

Psaki said handing out smartphones "is part of an effort to control and track illegal immigrants" before they move on to immigration procedures.

She said "the vast majority of people show up" on time.

The journalist asked Psaki if anyone in the administration was concerned that some immigrants might decide to take their phones and "throw them away."

“Do you have data that people are throwing away their phones? she retorted. "We make sure that people who migrate illegally to the United States go through our process and participate in hearings to determine if they can stay in the United States."

In a letter to Department of Homeland Security chief Alejandro Majorcas, Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri inquired about "reports that DHS plans to provide free phones to immigrants."

“These messages require responses,” commented Hawley.

The senator wrote that U.S. Customs and Border Protection "reported more than two million encounters with foreigners illegally crossing the southern border" in 2021, which Hawley said is "the highest number ever recorded," and remarked that some detained illegal migrants "were identified as previously deported members of the MS-13 gang".
