The White House offers a new financial aid package in connection with COVID-19

The White House has offered a new $ 916 billion coronavirus relief package. Treasury Chief Steven Mnuchin said the package includes "money for state and local governments" and "strong protections for businesses, schools and universities." The edition told in more detail Yahoo!.

Mnuchin said he discussed the package in a telephone conversation with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In a statement, Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer said the proposal would cut unemployment insurance spending from $ 180 billion to $ 40 billion, calling it "unacceptable."

“Even though Senate Majority Leader Mitchell McConnell signed the $916 million package, it cannot be allowed to interfere with bipartisan negotiations on another economic stimulus package that are ongoing in Congress,” Pelosi and Schumer said.

Mnuchin did not mention the new financial aid payments to Americans, which have been a priority for President Donald Trump for several months. However, House minority leader Kevin McCarthy said the first package (which is under discussion) includes direct payments of $ 600 plus an additional $ 600 per child.

“This is a much better package,” McCarthy said, comparing it to the $916 billion proposal currently moving forward in the Senate that does not include another round of payments to Americans.

The White House has been pushing senators to include $600 checks in the relief package. “While the amount has not yet been determined, direct payments to American workers remain one of the president's top priorities,” said White House communications adviser Ben Williamson.

The new proposed package also does not include any additional federal unemployment benefits.

Neither side appears to have come close to resolving disputes over government aid to Americans.

McConnell proposed to postpone the decision so that it could be taken early next year as part of a new aid package. But Democrats rejected McConnell's proposal, warning that refusing to help state and local governments could speed up the layoffs of firefighters, police and other government officials. Helping them have long been a top priority for Democrats.

An estimated 12 million people could lose all of their unemployment benefits the day after Christmas if lawmakers do not pass a package renewing federal aid programs. The eviction moratorium and federal paid sick leave and family leave programs will also expire without a decision by Congress.

The Democratic-led House of Representatives and the GOP-controlled Senate are set to pass a weekly spending bill to keep the government open until December 18 and buy more time to negotiate a bailout package. Congressional leaders said they want to attach the bailout bill to a broader government spending package.
