The Bellingcat research team checked the videotapes of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which shot Russian aviation in Syria.

The project participants came to the conclusion that in the overwhelming majority of cases, it is not the Islamic State that is being bombarded, but other armed groups fighting against the army of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Bellingcat team studied 60 videos published in official account Russian Ministry of Defense on YouTube. In the case of nine records geolocation and verification failed. Only in one case, according to the project participants, the stated goal of the Ministry of Defense coincided with the actual one, and the blow was dealt specifically to the positions of the IG.

The Russian military is accused of bombing rebels fighting against Bashar al-Assad from the first day of the Russian operation in Syria. On October 12, the EU foreign ministers demanded that Russia immediately stop striking the positions of the so-called “moderate opposition”.

The command of the Russian Armed Forces claims that the targets of the air strikes are the positions of the "Islamic State" and other terrorist groups in Syria.

30 September Russia inflicted its first air strike in Syria, near the city of Homs. The air strike killed 33 civilians, including three children and one Syrian civil defense volunteer.

On the eve of the Federation Council agreed on the use of air forces of Russia in Syria. According to the head of the Russian presidential administration, Syrian President Bashar Asad turned to Vladimir Putin with a request for military assistance.
