'Run for a goal, finish with pride': Ukrainian wounded military men run a US Marine Corps marathon

In a heavy downpour, but in a sunny mood, Ukrainian wounded soldiers ran the 44th Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. 15 participants were divided into two groups; they ran distances of 42 and 10 kilometers. Writes about this "Voice of America".

They say, besides sports, the marathon is also an information campaign for them to remind the Americans of the war in Ukraine.

The slogan of the current event was the phrase “Run with a purpose, finish with pride.” Among the participants are many on running prostheses, including Ukrainian military personnel. They say that the support of the American runners and the Ukrainian community added strength during the competition.

“I haven’t run in the rain with a prosthetic yet. But everything is fine, the rain is warm! It’s very nice that ordinary Americans came up and said with emphasis: “Glory to Ukraine!” This was very motivating to run,” Ukrainian military officer Yuri Kozlovsky shared his impressions.

“It was easier to escape than in Kyiv. Maybe because there was no pavement here,” adds military officer Olga Benda. “But the fact that I ran a distance of 10 kilometers again is very cool for me. I tried to finish as quickly as possible."

The start and finish of the race are not far from the Pentagon, and the route itself passed through the parks and memorials of the American capital. This is not the first time that a team of wounded military personnel from Ukraine has taken part in the race; such marathons are organized annually in the United States. They typically attract thousands of Americans and international visitors.
