Biden returns land Trump took to build border wall to Texas family

For several years, the Kavasos family fought the federal government for their land, which they owned before the Rio Grande River became the international border in South Texas.

The Texas Civil Rights Project, a nonprofit that represents the family, tweeted that their client, Eloise Kavasos, had land returned "after fighting the seizure and construction of the border wall since 2018."

“Now that we have successfully stopped construction of an unnecessary and wasteful border wall on family property, the Cavazos will be able to continue their quiet and fulfilling lives near the Rio Grande,” the organization wrote.

The problems began a long time ago. The family turned to the administration of George W. Bush and Barack Obama to keep their 6,5 acres (2,6 ha) property, but when Donald Trump began building the border wall, the family postponed the trial.

They hoped to end a decades-long spat when Biden took over as president and pledged stop building the wall.

In April, a federal judge ruled that the administration could "immediately take over" their land.

However, a few months later, the US government decided to return the family their land after an agreement was reached.

“I would like to thank my cousin Rey Anzaldúa, my brother Alfredo Cavazos and my sister Baudilia Rodriguez for their constant support and tireless efforts in the process of returning our family land over the past four years, which led to a positive result,” said Eloise Cavazos .

Since taking office, Biden has suspended construction of Trump's border wall.

He plans to return more than $ 2 billion, which the Trump administration took from the Pentagonto help pay for the construction of this structure.

“Constructing a massive wall that spans the entire southern border and costs American taxpayers billions of dollars is not a serious policy decision or a responsible use of federal funds,” the US Office of Management and Budget said.

For decades, the US government has built walls and other barriers along the 3200 km international border to allow illegal immigrants to bypass checkpoints.

Trump has allocated nearly $ 15 billion during his tenure to build a "virtually impenetrable" wall.

Despite resistance from human rights defenders, the president built 725 km of the wall. Yes, the work was progressing quickly, but he refused to conduct an examination of how the wall could affect the environment.
