Air passenger almost got off the plane due to allergy to strawberries

The 19-year-old, who flew to British Manchester from the Greek island of Zakynthos last Thursday with a Thomas Cook Airlines flight, claims that the airline’s employees threatened to take her out of the plane because of a severe strawberry allergy.

Chloe Fitzpatrick and her friend Matthew Higson climbed aboard the plane and the girl told the crew about her allergy to any products containing strawberries, writes Fox News. Chloe's allergy has a peculiarity - a reaction can occur even if a passenger several rows away from her eats strawberries, due to air circulation in the cabin. According to her, the staff responded that they should make an announcement about this to other passengers.

But shortly after the couple took their seats, a crew member told Fitzpatrick that the crew was "not comfortable" going on a flight with an allergy sufferer on board. Further, according to Chloe’s story, she was advised to figure out how to return home on her own.

“They said that I would have to figure out an alternative route home myself,” the girl told reporters. “The crew member began listing instances where they had turned passengers away from flights because of their allergies.”

The employee added that the pilot agreed with her and did not want such a passenger on board. According to the crew, "it would not be fair for other passengers to be denied full access to the menu on board" and the flight would not "feed one passenger at the expense of the other 200."

“The employee then asked if she could only serve certain items to customers at the front of the plane,” Chloe said. “She seemed to have no understanding of what this type of allergy was.” I felt humiliated and embarrassed by my condition."

However, the airline’s crew agreed to exclude products containing strawberries from the service during the flight and allowed Fitzpatrick to remain on the plane.

Chloe, who has been allergic to 10 months, says she always carries special medications with her and every time reports allergies to the crews of aircraft, and she hasn’t had a similar problem before.

Thomas Cook Airlines has told Fox News that the captain and crew have the right to make decisions about how to act in terms of passenger safety.

“The safety of our customers and crew always remains our top priority. When a customer lets us know they have an allergy, the crew member shares this information with the captain and crew as part of the pre-flight briefing to decide on a course of action based on the severity of the allergy. After speaking with both Ms. Fitzpatrick and the captain, the crew member made an announcement to all passengers, asking them to refrain from opening any strawberry-containing products they may have brought on board, and advised that no products containing strawberries would be served on the flight "
