The archive founded by Brodsky and Baryshnikov in New York went under the hammer

Archive of the legendary New York the restaurant "Russian samovar», among the founders of which was the famous dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, sold at auction.

The collection of documents and works of art, which were in the archives of the institution, was acquired by the Russian billionaire Alexander Mamut, reports the publication Runyweb.

“We managed to acquire the archive of the Russian Samovar restaurant in New York,” the new owner of the archive said at a meeting in the Moscow Pioneer cinema.

He added that already now in this cinema part of the archive exhibits are presented. Mamut promised that the rest of the exhibition will be presented to the public later, but he did not name the exact opening dates of the exhibition.

The archive of the “Russian Samovar” was put up for auction in the Russian auction house “Antiquarium”. The auction, in which the entire collection of the restaurant was represented by one lot, was held in Moscow on February 17.

The unique archive contains more than 700 items, among which are photographs, portraits, drawings, guest albums of the restaurant, books with endorsements belonging to Joseph Brodsky, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Yuz Aleshkovsky, Bulat Okudzhava and many others. There are also original works by artists Mikhail Shemyakin, Ilya Kabakov, Ernst Neizvestny and Zurab Tsereteli.

The amount that Alexander Mamut, whose personal fortune is estimated at $ 2,5 billion, paid for the archive of the “Russian Samovar”, has not been disclosed.

The restaurant "Russian Samovar" is located in Manhattan, it was founded in 1986, by the former Leningrad man Roman Kaplan. His co-founders were Mikhail Baryshnikov and Joseph Brodsky. The latter invested in the purchase of the restaurant part of the Nobel Prize he received in 1987. The restaurant quickly gained popularity and became a real cultural center, where it was possible to meet not only the brightest representatives of Russian immigration, but also visiting celebrities. The regulars of the Russian Samovar, which still works to this day, were Sergey Dovlatov, Bella Akhmadulina, Galina Vishnevskaya, Mstislav Rostropovich, Fazil Iskander, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Solomon Volkov and many others.
