Armenian soldier saved the life of US senator

In the US, an Armenian soldier saved the life of American Republican politician Mark Kirk. Kirk himself stated this while receiving the Medal of Honor of the National Assembly, writes Voice of America.

Arriving in Armenia a few years ago as an ordinary American congressman, Mark Kirk visited the border to familiarize himself with the situation, but if it had not been for an Armenian soldier who happened to be next to the future Illinois senator, this visit would be the last, Kirk recalls.

“We were in a trench near Tartarus, examining the positions of Azerbaijan. I raised my head by mistake, and at that moment I felt the hand of an Armenian soldier on my collar, who pulled me away. At that same second, a bullet from Azerbaijan flew past where my head was. An Armenian soldier saved my life, and for me it was a lesson that you can’t stick your head out of the trench,” Kirk said.

But this is not the only lesson the American politician has learned. He understood that the history of the Armenian people is unfair, and it is necessary to restore historical justice, first of all recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

“Who remembers the Armenians? I remember the Armenians and none of us should forget the Armenian Genocide, we should not forget the Armenian people, wonderful, creative people,” Kirk said.

According to representatives of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Brian Arduni and the Armenian Assembly of America (AAA) Aram Ambaryan, while Kerk was a senator, he did an unprecedented work to promote the interests of the Armenian people. Gratitude on behalf of Armenia to American politics was also expressed by Ambassador of Armenia Grigor Hovhannisyan.

“You have taken your place in our hearts, and we hope that Armenia has its place in yours,” the ambassador said.

After the presentation of the medal, the vice-speaker of the Armenian parliament Arpine Hovhannisyan noted that she could not imagine that she would give the Kirk a medal:

“I could never have dreamed that I would have the honor of presenting this medal to a distinguished senator,” she said.

Having learned that Arpine Hovhannisyan represents the Republican Party in the Armenian parliament, which is a majority, Senator Mark Kirk immediately joked:

“If things go wrong in the US and the Republicans together with Donald Trump fail, perhaps we are the US Republicans, we will seek asylum and move to Armenia.”
