Armenian parliament rejects Pashinyan’s candidacy for prime minister
The Armenian parliament rejected the candidacy of the leader of the protest movement Nikol Pashinyan for the post of prime minister. 45 MPs supported his candidacy, 55 voted against, two abstained.

In response, the politician urged his supporters to hold a rally of disobedience, writes with the BBC.
«Завтра (2 мая) с 08:15 блокируются все автодороги, объявляется тотальная забастовка, блокируется аэропорт, железная дорога. Наше движение не может не завершиться победой. С завтрашнего дня начинаются тотальные действия гражданского неповиновения», — заявил Пашинян, выступая перед многотысячной толпой своих сторонников. Он также призвал участников акции не покидать площадь Республики.
Никол Пашинян был единственным кандидатом на пост премьер-министра. Его выдвинула фракция «Елк», обладающая в армянском парламенте девятью голосами.
According to the constitution of Armenia, in such a situation, new elections of the head of government should be held in seven days.
Candidates for such elections should be nominated no longer by separate factions, but by at least one third of the total number of deputies. If the head of government is not elected a second time, it will lead to the automatic dissolution of the National Assembly and early elections.

The crowd in the central square of Yerevan met the voting results with a disapproving rumble.
Люди, которые провели в праздничном настроении последние 12 часов, заметно погрустнели, но протест так и остался подчеркнуто мирным — не было даже призывов устроить шествие к парламенту.
«Это последняя агония. Народ все равно победит, мы добьемся своего. Будет гражданское неповиновение, ежедневные акции протеста, забастовки, одним словом, народ до конца стоит», — сказал один из участников акции.
Thousands of people were left to wait for Pashinyan and his speeches. When he came to Republic Square, the crowd greeted him with such joy, as if he had already become prime minister.
Rising to the scene, Pashinyan said that now only talks on “her political funeral” are possible with the ruling Republican Party.
Оппозиционный лидер объявил о начале всеобщей забастовки с утра среды, и люди начали расходиться по домам. Протест продолжился на улицах — автомобилисты устроили акцию «Сигналь, если против республиканцев», и гудки в городе были слышны до поздней ночи.
Before the voting, Pashinyan answered questions from members of parliament for several hours.
Colleagues asked Pashinyan about his position on domestic and foreign policy, bank rates and demography.

During the lengthy answers to the questions, Pashinyan said that on the very next day after his election, he would remove all trade barriers, as well as take measures to support small businesses.
When asked why Mikhail Saakashvili and Alexei Navalny admire him so much, Pashinyan answered that he was not acquainted with either of them.

Recall in In April 2018, the Armenian parliament voted to turn the country from a presidential into a parliamentary republic, giving the Prime Minister broad powers. The head of government was elected former President Serzh Sargsyan, who is called “the most influential man of the country.”
Earlier, Sargsyan, who led the country for 10 years, promised that he would not be prime minister. His broken promise caused large street demonstrations in Yerevan and other cities.
The protesters complained about corruption in the country and demanded the resignation of Sargsyan. After he left the post of prime minister, the leader of the revolution Pashinyan was nominated for this place, he was the only candidate, because the ruling party did not nominate its representatives.
