US Army banned from taking on the service of holders of green cards

Recruiters of the US Army were ordered to stop attracting green card holders and any other foreigners who, by law, are eligible to serve in the army.

An email with the appropriate order was sent to 18 October recruiters with a note that the order takes effect immediately, the newspaper writes Small.

The restriction, according to the letter, is introduced “until further notice”.

October 13 The Department of Defense declared that green card holders could not go to training camps or other facilities of the armed forces until they passed the background check.

Prior to that, green card holders were allowed to go to training until the background verification was completed, if it had already been started. The new policy could have previously detained green card holders from the beginning of service for an average of one year due to the large number of inspections conducted.

But now the new order generally prohibits them from serving in the army and even going through a preliminary verification of the background until further notice.

Prohibiting green card holders from serving in the army contradicts federal law, which states that "a foreigner who has the legal right to permanently reside in the United States" may be enrolled in "any troops of the armed forces" of the country.

The current immigration law allows green card holders to speed up the process of obtaining American citizenship if they serve in the US Army for at least one year. Holders of green cards who did not serve in the army receive citizenship after a longer period of waiting, and they are subject to more stringent requirements.

From 2001 to 2015, the year over 109 000 military personnel became naturalized US citizens.
