Apple uninstalls about 200 apps from App Store after dozens of vaping deaths

Apple sometimes arranges waves of “clean-ups” of applications in the App Store, but, as a rule, programs that fall into disfavor are either clones of existing products or applications for sending spam. Sometimes removal is associated with the repetition of the functions of some standard iOS features. However, this time the company went on a large-scale sweep of applications related to vaping.

According to AppleinsiderThe reason for this was a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It says that as a result of a mysterious lung disease, presumably caused by vape, 42 people died. Therefore, Apple decided to remove the 181 application, which is somehow related to the smoking of electronic cigarettes. Many programs have already become unavailable, others will soon disappear from the App Store.

Why did Apple uninstall apps

Apple has never authorized the sale of vape cartridges and related accessories directly from applications. But there were programs that allowed people to control the temperature and other functions of their cigarettes. Some of them were news portals, social networks and games related to vaping.

Since this June, the company has stopped accepting such applications in the App Store. Those who already have a vaping app on their iPhone can continue to use it. However, new users will not find it in the corporation’s app store.

“We work hard to ensure that our app store is a trusted destination for customers, especially young people. The company continually evaluates apps and reviews the latest data to determine risks to users' health and well-being.

Recently, experts (from the CDC to the US Cardiology Association) have attributed various injuries and deaths to electronic cigarettes and vape products. They call the spread of these devices a public health crisis and a youth epidemic.

We agree and have updated our App Store review guidelines to clarify that programs that encourage or facilitate the use of these products are prohibited. As of today, these apps are no longer available for download,” Apple said.
