The new development of Apple will use the iPhone as a passport

Apple has registered a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for personal identification technology via iPhone, writes TJournal.

Patent under the title "Secure Import Documents" was filed with the Office of 30 March.

It is assumed that this innovation over time will allow the use of a smartphone instead of a passport, driver's license, permit to work and other documents.

The identification data of the device owner will be kept in a special closed storage. Its protection against unauthorized access will be provided by biometric verification technologies that allow the identification of a user's fingerprints and face (Face ID and Touch ID).

At the request of the competent authority, this “electronic passport” will be retrieved from the storage and transferred to the recipient using RFID or NFC radio frequency identification technology.

When the user presents the iPhone to the reader, the system will temporarily receive the necessary data, verify information with the state authorities' database in a few seconds and give the person certain permissions.

According to Apple Insider, the patented concept could have a wide range of applications. So, for example, private companies will be able to use it in their access systems for employees, and the state will be able to use it during passport control at the airport or at customs.
