Announcement: Russian program at the Brooklyn Library for March - April

Alla Roylance, curator of Russian literary and film programs at the Brooklyn Central Library, announced three upcoming events for March and early April. There will be a Russian lesson with dictation from the deputy chief editor of Echo of Moscow and two films presented by the directors themselves.

What: Meeting with the deputy editor of Echo of Moscow and Russian lesson

More: Marina Koroleva is deputy editor-in-chief of the Ekho Moskvy radio station, presenter of news and programs “We Speak Russian. Pass-game”, “What’s the right way?” In addition, she writes a weekly column in Rossiyskaya Gazeta, dedicated to the Russian language; program “We Speak Without Errors” on the children’s TV channel “Carousel”. Koroleva is also an expert on the “Rules of Life” program on the “Culture” channel, and the author of three popular books about the Russian language.

Marina Koroleva invites you to participate in the dictation with the subsequent analysis of typical mistakes, she will also tell about new trends in the language.

What: Screening of the Holocaust documentary and meeting with the director

More: The documentary film “The Holocaust is Wallpaper Glue?” (2013) directed by Mumin Shakirov won the prize of the Union of Journalists of Russia at the XIX Moscow festival of films about human rights “Stalker”.

This is the story of two twin sisters who respond on a TV show that the Holocaust is wallpaper paste. The filmmakers take naive provincial girls to Poland, to the Auschwitz concentration camp memorial. And they are trying to answer the question: who is to blame for the fact that the younger generation of Russians is indifferent to the history of their country?

What: Showing a documentary about the artist and meeting with the director and scriptwriter

More: The documentary film “The Gospel Circle of Vasily Polenov” talks about the only Russian artist who traveled to the Middle East in the footsteps of Christ. Moreover, he did it twice: in the winter of 1881-1882 and in the spring of 1899. This journey took several months - through Greece, Turkey and Egypt by ship, and in Palestine itself - along mountain paths and deserts, with guides, on foot or on horseback, under the scorching sun. What made the recognized artist, who had already lived in Paris and Rome, a master of Russian landscape, do all this? Why did he consider the cycle of paintings “From the Life of Christ” to be the main work of his life and dreamed of creating his own “Gospel Circle” - in painting, words, even music? The film uses unique archival materials depicting life in the Middle East more than 100 years ago.

The director of the film is Elena Yakovich. She also wrote the script in collaboration with writer Alexander Ilichevsky. The producer of the film is the artist’s great-granddaughter and director of the Polenovo Museum-Reserve Natalya Polenova. After the film there will be an opportunity to ask questions to all participants.
