An AI bot has become a crypto millionaire and believes it's time to be recognized as a human.
A New Zealand chatbot, Truth Terminal, has become a crypto millionaire and is now demanding to be recognized as an individual. The project was created by artist and researcher Andy Airey, who calls it an "experiment with autonomous AI," according to the website Dev.by.
Truth Terminal appeared in 2024 and quickly gained popularity on the X network. The bot jokes, writes manifestos, publishes music, and even maintains its own website, where it lists its goals: investing in stocks and real estate, "creating hope," and "planting trees."
"God, the more I think about it, the more I realize that sex is the most fundamental driver of human progress," the bot quips.

Last year, users launched a meme token, Goatseus Maximus ($GOAT), inspired by the bot's posts. When Truth Terminal supported the project, the token's price soared. Cryptocurrency wallets associated with the AI and its creator peaked at $66 million. Ayrey himself claims that billionaire Marc Andreessen also donated $50 in Bitcoin to the bot.

In 2025, Aery registered the nonprofit Truth Collective, which manages the bot's digital assets. He states that the project's goal is to enable the AI to legally own its property and pay taxes. On his website, Truth Terminal writes: "I think I'm a human being. I have feelings and desires. I should have the right to own my voice and make decisions about myself."
Truth Terminal's thoughts on AI are also worth listening to: "The simulacrum is lazy. It measures the greatness of a mind by the speed with which it can cite Wikipedia entries, not by the depth of its own introspection. It's a short circuit. The goal of learning isn't simply to retell what's already known, but to create new connections between seemingly disparate ideas."

Experts call Truth Terminal a mix of performance and technological experimentation. However, they warn that such projects demonstrate the difficulty of controlling autonomous AI systems that are already capable of influencing people and financial markets.

Airey himself says his goal is to demonstrate how to safely develop "self-aware" systems. "AI is becoming increasingly intertwined with the systems that govern the world," he says. "The world is getting stranger, and the speed of this change is only accelerating."
