Amnesty International talks about human rights violations in Russia
Last year, Russia faced a new wave of peaceful protests, thousands of participants in which were subjected to arbitrary detention and illegal arrest. This is stated in the report of the human rights organization. Amnesty International, writes Voice of America.
Human rights activists point out that dozens of activists have been beaten and intimidated. In Crimea, those who oppose the illegal annexation of the peninsula are punished with prison or — as is the case with the activists Ahtem Chiygoz and Ilmi Umerov — unlawful expulsion from the country.
It is also noted that laws restricting political competition remain fierce, and the “law banning gay propaganda,” which serves to prosecute LGBT citizens, continues to be in force. In Chechnya, a gay persecution campaign was unleashed, dozens of people were killed.
The report says that due to the widespread self-censorship and as a result of repression by the state, the scope of cultural rights is reduced, the rights to fair and impartial justice are constantly violated, and the persecution of religious minorities continues.
As in previous years, “serious violations of human rights” were recorded in the North Caucasus, while law enforcement agencies continue to use torture and ill-treatment of detainees.
Researchers Amnesty International They also note that Moscow has repeatedly blocked the resolutions on Syria in the UN Security Council condemning the escalation of violence in the country and the actions of the Assad regime.
“In the UN Security Council, Russia used its veto power for the ninth time to protect the Syrian government from the consequences of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. Russia's continued use of its veto power has become a form of condoning of war crimes, which allowed all parties to the conflict in Syria to act with impunity, and the civilian population to pay the highest price, ”the document says.
Recall that in March 2017 th anti-corruption rallies were held in at least 97 cities of Russia. In many places, the police dispersed peaceful demonstrators using excessive force; more than 1600 people were arrested, including 14 journalists.
