American tourist can be executed in Vietnam
A US citizen who was detained in Vietnam and accused of “attempting a coup d’état” will be put on trial at the end of this month. If the court finds him guilty, then the man faces the death penalty.
Michael Nguyen has been in a Vietnamese prison since last July. He traveled with two activists who were also arrested.
His family, who lives in the United States, says that Nguyen is innocent and not affiliated with any dissident groups. The father of four daughters left Vietnam in 1975 during the communist coup and fled to the United States.
“He is in a severely disadvantaged position and cannot adequately defend himself against any allegations against him,” the family said in a statement. Relatives clarified that the man was denied a lawyer.

The court is scheduled for June 24-25 in Ho Chi Minh City.
In February, the detainee’s wife, Helen Nguyen, visited the appeal of US President Donald Trump to Congress in the hope of drawing the attention of politicians to the situation in which her husband found himself.
Vietnam, a one-party communist state, intensified repression against dissidents after a change of leadership three years ago.
According to Amnesty International, the Vietnamese government is currently holding at least 128 prisoners. Among those detained are lawyers, human rights activists and democracy supporters.
