American tourist arrested for stealing Auschwitz 'souvenir'
He faces up to 10 years in prison.
The 37-year-old tourist from the United States tried to steal a historical artifact from the Auschwitz Museum in the form of a railway crutch, securing the rail to the sleeper, but he was detained by museum curators and handed over to police, writes TJournal.
The offender is temporarily released; he does not deny the blame. According to local laws, he could face up to 10 years in prison, but the criminal case has not yet been brought.
As noted by the museum staff, theft at Auschwitz is not uncommon. For example, in 2009, a neo-Nazi from Sweden stole and sawed a sign saying “Labor is free”. For this, he received the 2,5 of the year in prison. A student at the faculty of arts at an Israeli college stole from the Auschwitz Museum in Poland, several items that are then used for her exhibition.
The former concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, or Auschwitz, is located in Poland. In 1947, it was converted into a museum, and in 1979 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. About one million tourists from all over the world visit the museum annually.
