American scientists have found a possible cause of cancer

In an article published in the journal Trends in Molecular Medicine, oncologists biologists Pinku Mukherji and Mukulik Bose discussed the mechanism by which bacterial infections can cause the development of various cancers.

It is noted that at present, very little is known about what exactly is the cause of cancer associated with a bacterial infection. Scientists have noticed that about 20% of all malignant tumors are associated with any infection (viral or bacterial), and the primary cause of their appearance is constant inflammation.

The article substantiates the likelihood of cancer due to the interaction of microbes with MUC1, a membrane protein from the mucin group, which is present in almost all glandular epithelial cells. From the epithelial cells, malignant tumors develop in the colon, lungs, stomach, liver and pancreas.

Scientists explain that MUC1 initially has a protective function in bacterial infections. However, with prolonged interaction of mucin with infections, it can acquire the inverse function and become the cause of inflammatory processes, which in turn can lead to malignant tumors. Thus, scientists conclude, MUC1 can play two roles: protective and oncogenic.

Mukherjee emphasizes that in the future it will be necessary to study mucins more seriously in order to understand the root cause of the transformation of cancer cells.
